How to Apply for a Georgia Tax ID Number
- 1). Apply for a federal employee identification number (EIN). You can obtain an EIN by applying online to the Internal Revenue Service at its IRS.gov website (see Resources). You may also apply by calling the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, but this method is more limited since you can apply only between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
As soon as you complete your application, you will receive your EIN in the form of a PDF document that you can save to your computer or print for future reference. One caveat: You must be able to provide valid identification, such as a Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, to apply online.
- 2). Gather all pertinent business information. When filling out the form, you will need the business name, address, federal EIN and other information that will help identify your business.
- 3). Obtain the state tax ID number application form. The easiest way to get the form is online (see Resources). If you have any questions or would like to request a paper copy of the form, call the Georgia taxpayer registration number at 877-423-6711.
- 4). Submit the completed form. You have several submission options, including saving the completed form to your computer and emailing it to ST-License@dor.ga.gov; 2) printing a copy and faxing it to 404-417-4317; or 3) printing a copy and mailing it to the Georgia Department of Revenue, Registration and Licensing Unit, P.O. Box 49512, Atlanta, GA 30359-1512.
