Chaco Wash

We've heard in North American archaeology
"A state society here?" They all said "Bosh!"
And so we studied hunters and geology
Till Chaco Wash!

We took a second chair to Rome and Luxor,
Agreeing Teotihuacan was posh.
We stood in quiet awe of Machu Picchu,
Till Chaco Wash!

Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash!
At last we found our own bazaar!
Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash!
Not old Cahokia got this far!

The rain it never fell on Chaco Canyon,
But population grew and needed nosh.

So came a system of redistribution
To Chaco Wash.

Some say that Chaco Canyon held a market;
An idea that our critics try to quash.
They point out that there was no place to park at
Old Chaco Wash!

Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash!
And how the Europeans bawl
Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash!
"It isn't Athens, after all!"

You know, all roads lead to Pueblo Bonito,
Just like in Rome or Paris or Osh Kosh.
The towers on the road gave out a halo
For Chaco Wash!

We know there was a Mexican connection.
We've proved it over whiskey, gin, and scotch!
We postulate a north to south direction!
Oh Chaco Wash!

Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash! And how the Anasazi shine!
Chaco Wash! Chaco Wash!
Now all we need's the turquoise mine!

In short, there's simply not
A more convenient spot
To study state complexity
Than here in Chaco Wash!
