How to Drain a 2-Stroke Outboard Motor

    • 1). Set your outboard motor forward so that the lower unit is at waist level or higher.

    • 2). Bend down the ends of the cotter pin on the propeller. Depending on the make and model of your outboard, there may be a locking washer instead of a cotter pin in place to help hold down the propeller nut. If this is the case, bend the ends of the washer down.

    • 3). Remove the propeller nut with a wrench and slide the propeller off.

    • 4). Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the gear case with a screwdriver. Locate your vent plug just above the drain plug and remove it, too. Allow the gear oil to drain into a drip pan.
