How to Fix a Rusted Galvanized Water Pipe

    • 1). Turn off the water or gas line connected to the pipe and remove the rusted portions with a wrench.

    • 2). Scrub the pipe with white vinegar and a nylon bottle brush. Pour the vinegar inside the pipe and work it into the pipe threads with the brush. Allow the vinegar to sit for half an hour to overnight, depending on the level of corrosion.

    • 3). Scrub the pipe again with the nylon brush to remove the loosened rust. If you can’t remove the corrosion with the bottle brush, use a Dremel tool or drill with a brush attachment. Rinse the pipe with plain water and allow it to air-dry.

    • 4). Repeat the vinegar treatment and scrubbing process, if necessary, until all of the rust is gone.

    • 5). Cover the pipe threads with masking tape to prevent future rust buildup when the pipes are not in use.
