How to Color Graffitti

    • 1). Determine the level of detail that you want your tag to contain. If you are going for a quick "throw up" tag, you will only need one or two colors of paint. If you'd like to create a more complicated "piece," you will need three or more colors.

    • 2). Choose the color scheme that you want to work with. If the tag is intended to be a gang symbol, you may be restricted on the appropriate colors. If not, you will probably want to choose a high contrast selection of colors to exhibit the highest visibility. Complementary colors, those opposite on the color wheel such as green and magenta, or sky blue and orange. When paired together complementary colors jump of the wall and seem to vibrate.

    • 3). Spray some of the colors you want to use on a sheet of paper to test their combination. Test them on a inconspicuous part of the wall to see how well they cover. If the colors don't look good together or on the wall, choose different colors.

    • 4). Plan which color is going to go where in your tag. Most simple tags have an outline color and a fill color, but more complicated ones can have many accent colors. Knowing which color will go where will save you time while tagging.

    • 5). Spray your colors on the wall, following your designs. Add any additional coats until the image looks just as you want it to.
