DIY: How to Wire an Outlet

    • 1). Turn the electricity off to the circuit you are working on at the distribution panel. Check that the power is off with a non-contact voltage detector.

    • 2). Back off the three terminal screws on the outlet using a screwdriver.

    • 3). Strip 1/2-inch of insulation off the ends of the three wires in the wall that are coming from the distribution panel.

    • 4). Wrap the black hot wire around the brass terminal and tighten it down using a screwdriver.

    • 5). Wrap the white neutral wire around the silver terminal and tighten it down using a screwdriver.

    • 6). Wrap the green ground wire around the grounding terminal and tighten it down using a screwdriver
