How to Open an Excel Spreadsheet Without Installing Software

    • 1). Locate the file on your computer. Make sure it has the .csv file extension. If it does not (for example, it might be an .xlsx), ask the original creator of the file to re-save it as a .csv and resend the file to you.

    • 2). Start the text editor on your computer. For example, click on the "Start" or "Windows" button and then click "Run." Type "Notepad" into the "Open:" text box and then click "OK."

    • 3). Open the .csv file from your text editor. For example, in Notepad you would click "File" > "Open," then browse for the file. Click "Open" and the Excel file will open in the Notepad window.
