How to Make Avocados Soft and Ripe for Guacamole

    • 1). Place hard, unripe avocados in a brown paper bag. Close the bag tightly and keep it at room temperature. Treated in this way, the fruit should ripen in around two to five days. Do not subject the avocados to temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, as this can damage the fruit.

    • 2). Put an apple, banana or tomato in the bag along with the avocados if you wish to speed up the ripening process. Apples, bananas and tomatoes give off ethylene gas, which encourages fruit to ripen. Treated in this way, the avocados should ripen in one to three days.

    • 3). Check if an avocado is ripe by placing it in your palm and squeezing gently. Fruit that is ready to eat will give slightly to pressure but remain firm. The color of an avocado is not a reliable guide to its ripeness. Some varieties do become a deeper color as they soften, but others remain light green even when they are fully ripe.
