How to Use Water to Check a Propane Tank

    • 1). Make sure all valves on the propane tank are closed. Connect the hoses to the gas grill or other propane-fueled equipment going to the tank.

    • 2). Mix 2 tbsp. of water with 2 tbsp. of liquid dishwashing detergent (or other measure of 50/50 water and soap). Coat all connections that carry propane gas with the water and detergent solution.

    • 3). Open the propane tank valve. Look for bubbles everywhere you applied the water and soap. Any bubbling where you applied the mix indicates propane gas is escaping. Turn off the valve, then repair or replace the hoses and fittings. Do not use the propane-fueled equipment until the leaks are corrected.
