Although the number of people undertaking grand tours on bikes could be very low in India, as compared to other western nations, the idea is gradually picking pace and many are venturing out on their bikes on long trips. The Avenger and Thunderbird are two of the best options before such adventure seeking bike lovers. Let us take a close look at both these models vis-a-vis each other.

Bajaj Avenger - Costing about INR 80000/- and above, the Avenger is one the most affordable tourer bikes in India. Stylish in design and looks, this bike inspires a lot of confidence by its mere looks. A big bike with low placed seats and great appearance, the Avenger is powered by a 219.8 cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder, DTS-I, air cooled engine. This powerful engine generates a maximum power of 19.03 bhp @ 8400 rpm and a peak torque of 17.5 Nm @ 7000 rpm. Offering a top speed of 120 kmph, the Avenger returns a decent mileage of 35 to 40 kmpl. It comes with a fuel tank capacity of more than 14 liters, with a reserve tank capacity of 3.4 liters.

The Avenger takes around 5.2 seconds to reach the speed of 60 kmph from standstill. It comes with five gears in the one down and four up pattern. The suspension system is telescopic on the front and hydraulic in the rear. Avenger comes with disc brakes in the front and drum brakes at the rear.

Thunderbird - Alternatively, the Thunderbird is priced at INR 125000/-, and is a bit more expensive than the Avenger. However, it runs on a more powerful 346 cc, Single Cylinder, 4 Stroke, OHV, Dual Spark engine, which is capable of churning a power of 19.8 bhp @ 5250 rpm with a peak torque of 28 Nm @ 4000 rpm. Evidently, the Thunderbird is far more powerful than the Avenger is. In addition, the bike takes only 5 second to reach the speed of 60 kmph from standstill. As it carries a more powerful engine, the Thunderbird returns a lower mileage of 30 to 35 kmpl only. However, for a bike of this caliber, it is considered quite good.

Between the two, the Thunderbird is more powerful and high on performance than the Avenger is. However, the Bajaj bike is almost fifty thousand cheaper than the Enfield bike. This may work in its favour. For the buyers with no budgetary restrictions, the Thunderbird could be a more attractive option as it is more powerful and macho than the Avenger.
